Q1.What is Relative Humidity ?

Relative Humidity is the actual water content in % of that of a saturated volume.

When air is 50% saturated, it contains only one half the amount of water than it can contain at the same temperature and pressure.

As the relative humidity approaches 100%, the air can take on less and less moisture and at 100% relative humidity, that air cannot hold more water.

Q2.How Humidity Effects Industry ?

Humidity is a constant threat to production efficiency and product quality.

The damage which can be caused by excessive relative humidity are principally:-

  • corrosion of steel and metals
  • deteriorated characteristics of hygroscopic material
  • increased harmful activity of micro organisms.

Q3. How do dehumidifiers work?

Dehumidifiers work on the same principle as refrigerators and air conditioners. They have a cooling system that refrigerates the air entering the unit. The moisture in the air condenses on the cold coils and drips into a holding tank. The cold air is then passed over a warm set of coils and reheated to just a little over room temperature

Q4.What are the limitations in controlling RH with central air-conditioning plants/window air conditioners?

In tropical areas like India, with normal central air conditioning plants, lowest relative humidity of 55%-60%, at best, are attainable economically at times of high outside moisture ambient conditions like monsoon. This again is only possible with special design.

Q5.Is there any quick thumb rule applicable for determining the equipment selection ?

No, the moisture load in a particular area is directly influenced by :

  • The volume of the room
  • Outside absolute humidity
  • Inside absolute humidity to be maintained
  • The vapor pressure resulting from the difference between b) and c) above
  • The rate of migration of vapor resulting from d) above i.e. vapor pressure difference
  • Conveyor openings, if any
  • Door size and door openings per hour
  • Number of people and their activity level
  • The fresh air quantity

All of these can significantly change the dehumidifier equipment selection for the same size room.

Q6 . Where to position your dehumidifier...

The dehumidifier must be operated in an enclosed area* in order to be most effective. Close all doors and windows and other outside openings to the room, since the size of space in which the dehumidifier will operate effectively is greatly influenced by the rate at which new moisture enters the room. When locating the dehumidifier, be sure that it is placed so there is no restriction to air flowing either into the coils at the rear or from the front grille.

For the best performance, allow at least 12 inches of air space on the front and back.

Q7. How do I know what setting to use?

We suggest that you buy a separate, good-quality hygrometer to determine the actual moisture content of the air in the room you want to control. Then, with a bit of experimentation, you can set the humidistat on the dehumidifier so that it cycles off when it reaches the humidity level you want to maintain.
